Natural or synthetic polyamides or other acid-dyeable synthetic materials are treated with compounds of the formula <IMAGE> where X is an alkali metal or ammonium, R is C1-6alkyl, and n is 1 or 2. The materials thus treated have in these areas a reduced affinity for acid dyes and an enhanced affinity for basic dyes.
