<p>Antacid compound salts of sodium and magnesium ions, e.g. magnesium oxide, magnesium hydroxide, magnesium trisilicate, magnesium phosphate, and trisodium phosphate, are combined with water soluble alginates, e.g. sodium, potassium and magnesium alginate in a controlled release tablet containing an active ingredient, to produce a tablet having an improved hydration environment for the alginate. The improved hydration environment allows the alginate particles to swell in gastric fluid and produce a thicker and more uniform layer through which the active ingredient must diffuse, thereby decreasing the rate of release. <IMAGE></p> |
