Wire, filament or fibres of dia. is not >1.25 mm. and having a martensitic white cast iron structure possessing a rupture strength >14000 Kg/cm2. and a modulus of elasticity >1960 tonnes/cm2. or a more malleable pearlitic white cast iron having a similar modulus of elasticity are produced by quenching a stream of molten cast iron in a moving atmos. or by casting on a rotating disc. The fibres etc. have a carbon content of 2-6 wt.%. The cast iron structure may be heat treated above 648 degrees C. and below m.pt. of the material in a decarburising atms. in order to reduce the C content to 2%. The method reduces erosion of casting nozzles and rotating discs experienced during steel fibre prodn.
|
