The car drive system uses an i.c. engine (10) coupled to a continuously variable automatic transmission (11), with a clutch (K1) on the output side of the latter operated in synchronism with automatic cut-out of the engine (10) dependent on the travel parameters via an electronic control (29) coupled to a hydraulic control (26) for main and auxiliary oil pumps (25,33). Pref. the flywheel mass between the engine and the automatic transmission is also uncoupled from the engine via a second clutch (K2) and from the transmission by a third clutch (K3). ADVANTAGE - Improved fuel economy and reduced pollution.
