NEW MATERIAL:A carboxylic acid shown by formula I [G is residue after removal of (p+q) OHs from polyhydric alcohol; (p) and (q) are >=1 positive integer and (p+q) is number not exceeding the total number of OHs in polyhydric alcohol; group shown by formula II (formula III) is the group to be bonded to G through carbon to which removed p (or q) OHs where linked; R is 8-22C alkyl or alkenyl; B is group shown by formula IV or H; (m) is 1-5 integer; M is H, alkali metal ion, alkaline earth metal ion, etc.] or a salt thereof. USE:A surfactant having high hard water resistance. PREPARATION:A polyhydric alcohol is reacted with a compound shown by formula V in the presence of an acid catalyst to give a compound shown by formula VI [Z is residue after removal of pXOHs from polyhydric alcohol; (p) is 1 to positive number not exceeding the total number of OHs in polyhydric alcohol-1, and then the resulting substance is made to react with a compound shown by formula VII (X is halogen; E is H or cation) to give a compound shown by formula I.
