The optical character generator has a number of closely packed linear light emitting diode components (2) with driver components to the side of them and connected to control components (3). The control components convert print data from a bus system (4,5) into parallel control signals for selective driving of the LEDs in the LED components. Each LED component is divided into n groups of LEDs (e.g. LED1 LED31) geometrically mutually offset transversely word not edited the main direction of the diode lines. The drive components contain a circuit for generating internal timing control signals and stages associated with the LED groups for simultaneous processing of the print data into time staggered drive signals. The drive signals activate the associated LED groups at the time intervals depending on their geometric offsets so as to produce a sectionally composed part of a charge image on a charge storage drum.
