Method of setting off explosives - detonating second charge by light generated on detonation of first charge

The explosives have an explosive charge connected in a housing (1). The charge comprises a first charge part (2) and a second charge part (3) spatially separated from each other. The second part (3) is set off by light produced by the detonation of the first part (2) which is passed over an air gap to a photo diode (7) in a current loop of the ignition system (6) of the second part (3). ADVANTAGE - Second charge is safely detonated and is not damaged by its effect. Power is divided between two charges and so can be kept low.
