The automatic yarn repair and cops change system, at a winder, has a yarn cleaner (27) in the yarn path to register the presence, movement and dimensions of the yarn (35). The swing paths of the carrier (24) for the yarn from the supply bobbin (4) and the suction jet (34) for the yarn of the winding bobbin (38) each overlap with the yarn cleaner. The position of the carrier is shown by a signal to be coupled in a logic circuit with the signal showing the presence of a yarn from the supply bobbin at the yarn cleaner. After a feed movement of the carrier, should the signal show that no yarn from the supply bobbin is present, a control circuit triggers the cops change mechanism (6,13,17,19). After the cops has been exchanged, the carrier repeats the sequence to grasp a yarn and take it to the bonding point. Pref. the control system imposes a time displacement on the movements of the carrier for the yarn from the supply bobbin and the suction jet from the yarn from the winding bobbin, so that the active search for the yarn from the winding bobbin is after the check on the supply yarn. The control stops the yarn bonding unit drive if no supply yarn is present at the carrier after its movement, and before the cops change mechanism (6,13,17,19) is activated, and the carrier is returned to its start position and normal drive. A counter records the number of failed yarn searches to trip the cops change action after a given number of attempts. A blower system (14,15,16) at the supply bobbin (4) directs an air stream from the bobbin towards the yarn catch position (25) of the carrier (24).
