A tanker has a plurality of tanks arranged next to each other in rows, parallel to the longitudinal axis of the ship and interconnected by pipes. Part of the tanks forms outlying lateral tanks and another part forms inner central tanks. Pumping means pump the contents of a tank into another tank, and fill up and empty the tanks. The tanker has at least one safety tank (2, 3) which in normal operation is empty and which can be linked by safety pipes (41-46), provided with closure elements and independent from the main pipes, to one tank among a plurality of lateral tanks (20, 21, 22-25, 20a-25a). Pumping means for generating and maintaining a negative pressure in the safety tank (2, 3) are linked thereto. |
