The invention relates to a device for automatically positioning a feeler on the median axis of a rail, comprising a carriage (6) guided along the rail by lateral guides located against the opposing flanks of the rail and including a rectangular central recess (7) for receiving moving equipment (5) carrying at least one feeler (2). The lateral guides are located in two opposing pairs; one of the pairs (10, 11) is fixed, whereas the other comprises two moving guides (12, 13) carried by a pair of arms which are articulated on a vertical spindle (14) and returned to the fixed guides by springs (18, 18'), the said arms carrying at least one finger (20, 20') placed midway between the articulation spindle (14) and a moving guide and coming against the feeler-carrying equipment (5); the moving equipment is subject to the action of a spring (17) tending to move it away from the fixed lateral guides.
