The pile driver operates on the principle of the Diesel engine cycle. It has a cylinder (10) with a hammer head (16) and a heavy piston (18) operates inside the cylinder. The cylinder has rectangular ports (28) formed in its wall. These ports are covered by an external sleeve (24) which has passageways (22,34) and which forms a seal with the cylinder wall. The sleeve (24) can be moved axially with respect to the cylinder by means of hydraulic cylinders (40) in order to adjust the length of the effective working stroke of the pile driver.
