In an automatic yarn splicing operation at an automatic spinning assembly, the spliced yarn held at the splicer is tested by at least one sensor at defined points to measure thick and/or thin sections as further splicing criteria. The measured data are passed to the counters which register the splicing actions, in a continuous flow. The different profiles of the thick and/or thin sections and/or their location to the splicer and/or their specific thick-thin section sequences are defined and/or assessed and counted separately at the counters, or their measured data processing unit, as special splicing actions. The count is stored, written up and/or passed on to be used as a basis for adjustments to the criteria, parameters and/or nominal values for subsequent splicing operations. Pref. at the measured value processing unit, the computer for the action counters is coupled to them to show the type and/or weight and/or frequency of an action in comparison with other actions in the splicing process, to give indications for change in the splicing criteria and/or the nominal values and threshold values which can be converted into usable form. At least one splicing step is monitored by a sensor, as a characteristic action, and passed to the action counter or computer for assessement of this particular splicing action. The computer, through an analysis program, gives an assessment of possible faults and stoppages, to be used to adjust the splicing steps to reduce the fault level. ADVANTAGE - The method gives automatic yarn splicing, within narrow tolerances, to make the best use of automatic splicing facilities.
