The optical scanner has a point light beam (3) source, a mechanism for moving the beam along a path on the surface and a detector for directionally accurate detection of the light signal reflected from the surface. A transparent plate (6) with a refractive index greater than one and two parallel surfaces (7,8) is arranged in the point beam path. The plate is rotated uniformly with a continuously varying inclination of the surfaces wrt. the direction of the beam. USE/ADVANTAGE - Ensures that same light signal emanates from each measurement point irrespective of motion wrt. surface.
