Alternative tools (5) are arranged upright in magazines (57) for selection by the gripper (56) of an exchange head (55) movable in three orthogonal directions (X, Y, Z) on two carriages (52, 54) running along rails (51, 53). Data are recorded on chip cards (11) carrying batteries, memory and processing units, and modems with antennas for exchange of data via communication units (60) with a numerical controller (70). The memories hold information on the state of the tools and the treatment conditions which requires no revision when tools are changed. ADVANTAGE - Exchange of tools is possible without redn. of working capacity of processing machinery.
