Epoxidised fatty alcohols are prepd. by reacting fatty alcohols with at least 1 C=C bond with aq. solns. contg. 60-92 wt.% of H2O2 and formic acid, in absence of a catalyst, at 40-70 deg.C, using 1.1-3.5 mols of H2O2 and 0.05-1 mols of formic acid, w.r.t. 1 C=C bond to be epoxidised; reaction is in presence of 1-10 wt.% w.r.t. H2O2 soln., of a buffer. The buffer is 3-8 wt.% w.r.t. H2O2 soln., of an acetate of formate of Li, Na, K, Ca, Ba or Zn, a hydrogen phosphate of Na or K, or an alkali (na or K) oxalate, pref. Na or K acetate or sec. Na phosphate.
