An upright stator (4), movable along a horizontal baseplate (2), carries a vertically movable slider (6) on which a housing (12) is provided for a transverse arm (8) protruding to an adjustable extent, read by a sensor (66) from a scale (64). A measuring head (10) at the end of the arm (8) ranges over the baseplate (2). One (40) of the air bearings on the baseplate (2) is adjustable so that the stator (4) can be repositioned in the y-z plane parallel to the vertical z-axis. ADVANTAGE - Measurement errors due to torques dependent on protruding length of transverse arm excluded.
