The invention concerns a process for purifying an oxidation waste gas evolved in a pressurized reaction process and laden with aliphatic and/or aromatic substances, using a waste gas wash. The waste gas to be purified is evolved, in particular, in an oxidation process operated with a gas containing oxygen, e.g., the air oxidation of paraxylol (p-X) by the so-called Witten DMT process for producing dimethylterephthalate (DMT). The waste gas undergoes absorption purification under pressure. The absorbent consists predominantly of an ester or a mixture of esters which has a higher boiling point than the substances to be removed by washing. The process preferably includes the following main steps: a) partial condensation at approximately 35-60 DEG C of the substances to be removed by washing; b) absorption with paratoluyl acid methyl ester (p-TE) or a mixture of p-TE and benzoic acid methyl ester (BME); c) absorption with BME and/or methanol; d) absorption with water; e) combustion under pressure, possibly with a supply of oxygen and combustible products.
