MODEM-CONTROLLED AC POWER CONTROLLER

A modem-controlled power controller (12) for controlling AC power to computers supplies AC power to computer (20) and has a line filter (54) electrically in series between power input (52) and power output (58). Relay (56), between power input (52) and power output (58), has normally open contacts operable between open and closed states, the open state disconnecting AC power from power input (52) to power output (58). Control logic circuit (74) is responsive to modem interface (72) for closing relay contacts to connect power output (58) to power input (52) and for keeping relay contacts in the closed state for at least about five minutes after the carrier detect signal ceases being received by the modem (18). Alternately, a microprocessor (200) replaces the control logic (74) and interface (72).
