PURPOSE:To prevent plural different VITC (time code inserted between vertical blanking periods) signals from being in existence in a video signal on a magnetic tape by detecting all positions of an input video signal in which superimposition of the VITC signal may be possible and muting the signal positions. CONSTITUTION:An internal counter of a VITC position detection section 2 detects positions of an input video signal 1 on which a VITC may be superimposed, a VITC position mute selection section 4 selects which of the positions of an input video signal 1 on which a VITC may be superimposed or positions going to be recorded are to be muted and a VITC position mute section 3 mutes the positions of the input video signal selected by the said VITC position mute selection section 4. Then a VITC signal superimposing section 5 superimposes the VITC signal generated by a VITC signal generating section 6 onto the above input video signal to form a video signal on which the VITC signal is superimposed and it is recorded on a magnetic tape, then only a couple of VITC signals are recorded.
