Prepns. of delta lactones (I) in the 3R5R (Ia), 3R5S (Ib), 3S5S (Ic) and 3S5R (Id) configurations are new. R1 = 3-15C alkyl or alkenyl (with 1-7 C-C double bonds) or CH2OH. (I), except (Ia) where R1 = 5C alkyl are new. Also new are the precursors (IIb) and the 3S5R (IIIa), 3R5S (IIIc) and 3R5R (IIId) forms of (III). Pref. synthesis is diastereoselective redn. of the oxo gp. of cpd. (IIa) to (IIIa)/(IIIb), then regioselectively oxidising to (Ia) or (Ib).
