PURPOSE:To obtain an olefin oligomer useful as a base material for automotive engine oils, lubricants such as airplane hydraulic oils and having a low viscosity by polymerizing an olefin in the presence of BF3, a BF3-alcohol complex and a BF3-carboxylic acid complex as a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:When a >=3C olefin (preferably 8-14C alpha-olefin) is polymerized to obtain an oligomer, the polymerization reaction is performed in the presence of BF3 as a catalyst and in the presence of an alcohol and a carboxylic acid as catalyst auxiliaries or in the presence of BF3, BF3-alcohol complex and BF3-carboxylic acid complex as a catalyst. The adjustment in the mole ratio of the alcohol/carboxylic acid or the adjustment in the mole ratio of BF3-alcohol complex/BF3-carboxylic acid complex permits to control the viscosity of the resulting oligomer. The alcohol includes methanol, ethanol and octylacohol. The carboxylic acid includes acetic acid and butyric acid. |
