PURPOSE:To ensure easy impregnation with a thermoplastic resin, provide sufficient unidirectional strength and vertical strength and ensure favorable fluidity at the time of molding, by using discontinuous fibers as reinforcing fibers, orienting the fibers in a specified range in one direction, opening part of a fiber bundle, thereby generating non-oriented components providing a porosity in a specified range. CONSTITUTION:To produce a fiber-reinforced thermoplastics sheet, discontinuous fibers are transferred between a plurality of drums having spikes on the surfaces thereof and rotated adjacent to each other at different speeds. The rotational speeds of the drums are so controlled as to form a nonwoven fabric in which 30 to 95% of the fibers are oriented in the rotating direction of the drum, the remaining 70 to 5% of the fibers are set in random directions and which, when pressed under a pressure of 10kgf/cm<2>, has a porosity of 0.4-0.9. The nonwoven fabric is impregnated with a thermoplastic resin. To obtain an oriented nonwoven fabric with an arbitrary weight per unit area by a simplified process, an elongated nonwoven fabric 5 taken out of a single card is folded on a conveyor 8 moved in parallel with the longitudinal direction of the fabric 5 so as to obtain a desired weight per unit area, without disturbing the orientation of fibers. The folding may be achieved by feeding the conveyor 8 with the elongate nonwoven fabric 5 from a device 9 which is provided at a stage precedent to the conveyor 8 and is reciprocated in the running direction of the conveyor 8. |
