Addition of thiol(s) to encourage cell regeneration and growth - used for treating Alzheimer's disease and against poisoning with hydrocarbon(s) e.g. paraquat, lindane, dieldrin

Thiols of formula RSH can be used to maintain sufficient cell division in vivo and in vitro, even in the presence of cell poisons. (R is not given). The thiol is pref. L-cysteine, or is a thiol in which the SH gp. is Me-substd., (e.g. L-methionine) or a methylsulphonium cpd. (e.g. S-adenosyl-methionine), or a sulphonic acid such as cysteic acid or tuarine. The thiols are modified by ethanoyl gps. and the aminoacid configuration are stabilised by organic salts, e.g. of zinc. The thiols are used to encourage cell growth and regeneration despite the presence of cell growth and regeneration poisons such as halides and hydrocarbons. The thiols can thus be used in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease (Al poisioning) and against poisoning by fluorine and Paraquet, Dieldrin and Lindane, used as insecticides and pesticides in agriculture and which damages the cytoskeleton. The thiols can be used in vivo to protect healthy or damaged cells against further damage.
