PURPOSE:To set a range finding area which is high in use frequency according to an attitude of photography and to improve the easiness in use by setting one detection output among plural photographic distance detection outputs according to the attitude of photography. CONSTITUTION:A focus detection part 8 is provided with four focus detection areas, whose line sensor outputs are supplied to a control circuit 7. The control circuit 7 is provided with longitudinal/lateral detection switches Sa, Sb, and Sc for the camera and, for example, the attitude where the camera is held laterally is detected. In AF operation, one of the switches Sa - Sc is turned on corresponding to the camera attitude and the range finding area which is high in use frequency is initialized according to the holding attitude; and its defocusing quantity is inputted and compared with a specific value K and when the quantity is less than a specific value, focusing is decided to drive the lens, so the camera which is convenient to use is obtained. |
