<p>A transmission (1) has a pair of parallel shafts (4, 5), a first shaft (4) being connected through a torque converter (3) with a vehicle engine and a second shaft (5) carrying an output gear (6) which is adapted to engage with a differential unit for the front wheel drive axle. The first shaft (4) is provided with a first gear system (10, 11) thereon which includes one or more planetary gearsets, and the second shaft (5) is provided with a second gear system (21) thereon which includes a planetary gearset. A sun gear (23) constituting the planetary gearset of the second gear system (21) is integrally provided on the second shaft (5) so that it can rotate together with the second shaft (5). A brake (BO) and a one-way clutch (OWC O) for controlling the action of this planetary gearset are provided between the second shaft (5) and the case (10) in such a manner that the brake (BO) can restrict the rotation of the second shaft (5), and that the one-way clutch (OWC O) can prohibit the rotation of the second shaft (5) in one direction.
