The invention relates to a control device (52) for a thrust cylinder (34) actuated by a fluid, which reduces the speed of retraction of a piston rod (44) of the thrust cylinder by adding a flow of pressurised fluid to the fluid discharged from the thrust cylinder to a tank (66) by means of a restriction member (96). A tool control member (110) forces a flow of fluid coming from a source (68) to combine with the flow of fluid discharged from the thrust cylinder in response to reception of a position signal coming from a tool position detector (54) and after the order given by the member (110) to displace a control valve (80) into a position in which a flow of fluid is delivered from the thrust cylinder to the tank.
