A telecommunications device, such as a modem or a facsimile machine, for operation in a plurality of countries. The modem (10) has a modem engine (11) and a line interface module (12). The modem engine (11) contains a modem bit pump and other modem circuits (17), and is controlled by a controller (20). The line interface module (12) contains a line interface circuit (32) and a memory (33). The line interface circuit (32) contains the hardware required for compatibility with one or more selected countries. The memory (33) contains the specific operating requirements and parameters for that selected country. The modem (10) can be quickly configured for operation in a selected country by installing the line interface module (12) for that country in the modem (10). <IMAGE>
