Compsn. (I) for preventing development of dust during handling of building materials contains glucomannan (II). Pref. preventing development and spreading of dust during demolition of buildings comprises applying hydrated (II), opt. with alkali soln., before, during, or after demolition. (2) Preventing formation and spreading of asbestos dust during removal of asbestos cement layers comprises applying, before or during removal, hydrated (II) on asbestos cement layer to be removed. Pref. (I) also contains cpd. which reacts alkaline in aq. soln., in proportion so on addn. of water, (I) forms hydrated (II) which has alkaline reaction and (II) concn. of 0.1-2% (all pts. wt.). (I) also contains additive(s) which inhibit dust development or are deodorants or colourants. Esp. (I) contains additive for inhibiting dust formation during demolition. ADVANTAGE - (I) meet requirements for efficacy, lack of toxicity, stability against degradation, and economy.
