The power unit (1a) comprises a casing structure (8-11) a reciprocating piston internal combustion engine comprising pistons (16) working in cylinders (7) disposed in line. The axes of the cylinders are parallel and lie in a common first plane (6a). A crankcase (28,29) has a crankshaft (14) rotatable within it about an axis (6) and driven by pistons. A transmission system (2) comprises gear-carrying shafts including an input shaft (4) and two coaxial output shafts adapted respectively to drive two wheels located to opposite sides of the power unit. A second plane (6b) lies at right angles to the common first plane and includes the crankshaft axis. The transmission system is arranged alongside the cylinders so tha the input shaft, the output shafts and the cylinders all lie to the same side of the second plane.
