The present invention describes a process and a device for stacking elongated pieces 15, such as sawn timber. According to the invention, the pieces are transferred from the feed conveyor 1, to which they have been fed by means of a sorting conveyor 14, to a stacking conveyor 2, which is moved to hang above the stack 17 once it is full. The stacking conveyor 2 is then moved rearwards to above the stack 17 and the pieces 15 resting on the said conveyor 2 are dropped individually down onto a stack from the discharge end of the conveyor 2. The track length of the feed conveyor 1 is varied, together with the positional movement of the stacking conveyor 2, and thus allows the sorting conveyor 14 to feed the pieces 15 continuously to the feed conveyor 1. <IMAGE>
