Device for automatically installing an optical cable (1) in an underground duct (2). It includes a chamber (6) in the form of two half-shells (8, 9) which is pressurised to a few bar and through which passes the cable in a sufficiently sealed manner (16, 14, 15). An automatic loader (24, 22) fits notched washers (10) around the cable at regular intervals, for example every 10 metres. The speed of advance of the cable is continuously measured (8, 19) and displayed (20). A potentiometer (21) adjusts the frequency at which the notched washers (10) are fitted. <IMAGE>
