A piston material for an excavator is composed of 0.13-0.2 wt.% C, 0.15-0.35 wt.% Si, 0.8-1.2 wt.% Mn, 2.8-3.2 wt.% Ni, 1.4-1.8 wt.% Cr, 0.4-0.6 Mo, 0.1-0.14 wt.% V, 0.015-0.035 wt.% Al and a remainder of Fe. The piston material is produced by mechanically treating the alloy, carburizing it at 890-930 deg.C, quenching it at 870-900 deg.C, tempering it at 160 deg.C, and retempering it at 150 deg.C. The piston has a high abrasion-, fatigue- and impact- resistance.
