Process for coating the inside of metal containers (I) comprises applying and stoving a coating material (II) contg. (A) 10-30wt.% COOH gp.-contg. polyester(s), (B) 7-22wt.% phenolic resin(s), (C) 4-27wt.% thermoplastic resin(s), (D) 0-7wt.% epoxy resin(s), (E) 0-6wt.% aminoplastic resin(s) and (F) 30-70wt.% organic solvent(s). More specifically, amts. are 15-25wt.% (A), 10-15wt.% (B), 13-23wt.% (C), 0.5-3wt.% (D), 0.5-4wt.% (E) and 30-61wt.% (F); (A) has Mn 500-5000 and acid number 10-150mg KOH/g, and (B) has Mn 300-600 and OH number 80-400mg KOH/g; (C) has Tg above room temp., pref. 30-200 deg.C, mean particle size up to 1000nm, pref. up to 500nm, and pref. contains at least 1 (pref. at least 2) Oh or COOH gps./mol.; (D) has Mn 300-10,000; (II) is applied to the metal in the form of sheet and then stoved, and the coated sheet is processed into containers.
