PURPOSE: To increase the exhaust gas-purification ability of an internal combustion engine by depositing a catalytic amount of platinum group metal and base metal oxide on a support comprising an active aluminum oxide containing 10 wt.% or more cerium oxide. CONSTITUTION: An aqueous suspension comprising from 0 to 90 pts.wt. lattice- stabilized active aluminum oxide and/or precursor thereof and from 10 to 100 pts.wt. cerium oxide or soluble and/or insoluble precursor of cerium oxide, is prepared. This aqueous suspension is spray-dried, and the obtained molded part is heated at from 350 to 1,140 deg.C for from 15 min to 24 hours to obtain a support for platinum group metal-containing, three-way catalysts. This support is used in the form of a pellet, granule, press molded product, etc. A catalytic amount of platinum group metal and optionally a base metal oxide is deposited on this support to form a three-way catalyst for purifying the exhaust gas in internal combustion engines. |
