A measurement device for determining torque has a torsion pipe (10) in which axial notches (12) are cut. Ridges (13, 14) of different widths are located between the notches (12). Slits (15) are made in the broader ridges (13). At low torques, the torque is therefore transmitted only by the narrow ridges (14). If the torque exceeds the stiffness of the narrow ridges (14), the slits (15) are closed, i.e., the two parts (13a, 13b) of the broad ridge (13) touch each other. As a result, a higher torque can be transmitted by the ridges (13) in a second measurement range or, if the ridges (13) are sufficiently stiff, the ridges can act as an overload protection. Additional overload protection in the form of a recess (35) and a nose (36) may also be provided. The torque sensor is very easy to make and can measure the torque in several measurement ranges and with the help of an overload protection.
