Determination of image edge structure - uses comparison process to set transmission process

An image processing system has the image sampled and represented in part image blocks. The data transmission capacity, e.g. 64 kbit/s determines the quantisation characteristic and a compromise, is adopted between data rate and error probability. Coupled to the process is comparison to determine if the image is set from an edge and is based upon a threshold value. The threshold value is dependent upon the average luminance value of the image point. The quantisation characteristic is then controlled to achieve the required compromise. ADVANTAGE - Increased data rate without loss of quality.
