PURPOSE: To realize a very high speed logical operation including AND, NOT, NOR, and EXOR gates by coupling a pair of orthogonal polarized pulse signals to soliton in a birefringence fiber and making them pass a filter having a prescribed transmission characteristic. CONSTITUTION: Polarized pulse signals A101 and B102 which have a frequencyνo as the center spectrum frequency and are orthogonal to each other and have an intensity of logical '1' ate propagated in a birefringence fiber 104 to bring about soliton capture between two signals A and B, and the frequency is shifted byΔν'o to generate an optical signal C'103 which has center frequenciesνo +Δνo andνo -Δνo . The optical signal C'103 is transmitted through a frequency filter 105 to become an optical signal C106. If the filter 105 is a BPF having the center frequencyνo +Δνo orνo -Δνo , this optical device is operated as an AND gate. It is operated as an EXNOR gate if one of signals A and B is in the output level of logical '1' and that other is in the output level of logical '0' and the center frequency of the filter 105 isνo .
