PURPOSE:To effectively utilize back light and to brighten and sharpen display videos by disposing a light condensing material corresponding to respective picture elements right above the picture elements and across the light shielding layer of the picture elements on the side nearer a light source than the light shielding layer. CONSTITUTION:The light condensing material 12 is disposed in correspondence to the respective transparent picture element electrodes 2 on the surface on the side opposite from the transparent insulating substrate 4 side of an upper polarizing plate 9 and further a back light source 11 is disposed above this material. The back light 13 is refracted and projected to color filters 5 by the condensing material 12 as shown by arrows 13 in the same manner as the light to be projected to the region indicated by arrows W 2. Thus, the back light which is heretofore lost by the light shielding layer 6 is effectively utilized and the darkening of the display videos by the lowered opening rate is obviated.
