Holding device for the application of microwave fields to items to be treated which has a treatment chamber with walls of a low-absorption material. Provision of a holding device of the aforementioned kind which, on introduction into microwave field, generates comparatively little additional field concentration or excessive field strength increases and thus causes little danger of deterioration of the items to be treated and over-irradiation but at the same time is robust and therefore suitable even to hold difficult substances. Treatment chamber BK is secured to a metal bearer frame TG having a plurality of interconnected closed frame cells RZ1a, RZ1b, RZ2a, RZ2b which are at least partly formed by substantially straight, rod or tubular frame components. There are a plurality of first, at least approximately rectangular or square frame cells RZ1, RZ1b and at least one second, at least approximately triangular or trapezoidal frame cell RZ2a, RZ2b. There are at least one first and second frame cell in which one terminal section E2a, E2b of at least one frame component of the second frame cell is secured to one frame component of the first frame cell and in which this connection point V is at least approximately arranged at a distance A1, A2, which corresponds at least approximately to an odd multiple of a quarter wavelength of the microwave field, from at least one of the ends E1a, E1b of the frame component of the first frame cell.
