In letter-box colour television system additional information is transmitted at a markedly reduced amplitude for reasons of compatibility. This however also reduces the ability to make full use of the maximum attainable channel capacity for the additional information. By transmitting the additional information at full amplitude and by compartmenting or modulating the additional information into a noise-like structure within the boundary regions it is possible to make use of the maximum attainable channel capacity for the additional information with little reproduction interference in the 4:3 receiver. A recognition signal marks the lines with the additional information and makes it possible for an improved 4:3 receiver to black-scan the lines with the additional information. Applications: 4:3 and 16:9 TV receivers.
