摘要 Prodn. of fire-retardant, lightweight acoustic and thermal insulation based on inorganic fibres (I) involves adding organic and inorganic binders and other additives to an aq. (I) slurry, sedimenting the solids, dewatering and then drying. The novel features are that; a) starch (II), a coagulation regulator (III), a clay mineral (IV) and nonionic and/or anionic surfactant(s) are stirred into the (I) slurry, the additives are flocculated on (I) with vigorous stirring and the filtrate free from solids is sepd. from the fibrous mass; and b) a mineral acid silica sol. (V) is added to the (partly) dewatered fibre mat in such an amt. that the penetrating (V) is aggregated and gelled continuously by the basic components of (III) and the fibre compsn. then the mat is dewatered and dried. USE/ADVANTAGE - The material is produced without using excessive amts. of organic binder. In a fire, it forms practically no gas from low temp. carbonisation or smoke, is not discoloured and retains its mechanical stability. It remains waterproof when exposed to steam and retains its mechanical stability even when wetted with water. The uniform felt structure is retained during machining and shaping and it is practically insensitive to mould and other biological influences.
