The method is for setting or clearing the secret number of the VTR so that the useage of the unauthorised person is prevented. When the secret number is set, in a memory (30), the clear flag turns to zero. Then, a microprocess (20) checks and compares the input secret number provided from a remote controller. If both numbers are coincided, the power is turned on. In case of replacing the present secret number, the new secret number is entered in second after inputting the secret key signal in first, then pressing the secret key signal again in last.
