Sealing undersurface of layer of contaminated soil - by placing layer of waterproof material under soil

The method is for sealing the undersurface of a layer of contaminated soil. A machine, similar to a coal mining machine, is used to remove soil from under the contaminated layer in a series of strips as in coal mining. As each strip is removed, a sheet (11) of water-proof material is unwound from a coil (12) mounted on the machine. This sheet (11) is supported at a short distance below the roof (10) of the excavation. The gap between the roof (10) and the sheet (11) is then back filled. The rest of the excavation is then back filled using the material which was removed during the excavation. USE - Prevention of water seepage through contaminated soil.
