A method for making a refractory material for molten metal casting, comprises the steps of mixing a primary refractory material with electrofused aggregates together with a binder to form a mixture, and shaping the mixture to thereby make a shaped body. The electrofused aggregates consist essentially of 97-30 wt.% Al2O3 and 3-70 wt% ZrO2 and has microcrack therein, having a width of 0.01-20 micron meters. 40-97wt.% of the primary refractory material is mixed with 3-60 wt.% of the electrofused aggregates. Examples are given in which the primary refractory material is alumina, alone or mixed with carbon.
