Water, foodstuffs and air are sterilised by contacting with an isothiocayanate ester (pref. an alkyl isothiocyanate or allyl isothiocyanate). Excess isothiocyanate ester is then removed from the treated material, (e.g. in an absorbent). The isothiocyanate ester may be used as vapour or in soln. or may be incorporated in the surface of fibres or plastics prods. to render them bactericidal, or incorporated in a resin coating applied to the surface of such prods. For example, air may be treated with isothiocyanate ester vapour to sterilise it and the air then passed through an absorbent for the isothiocyanate ester. Air (or other gases) contg. the ester vapour may be passed through foodstuffs (such as cereals) to sterilise them and increase their storage life.
