The instrument (2) is mounted at the front of a shaft (13) and is retracted when the vehicle is not used. A movable cover (1) over the retracted setting hides the instrument form a potential thief. The retraction and the cover drive are taken from a single servo motor (4) in a fixed mounting alongside the shaft. The servo motor drives a spindle (5) or a belt drive, to pull back the instrument. The cover is coupled to the drive by a coupling to the side of the instrument, via pivot mounted supports for the cover. An alternate drive includes a pneumatic coupling. USE/ADVANTAGE - Vehicle radios, valuable instruments. Automatic protection, can be coupled to ignition.
