A process of exposing a fluid medium, such as machine oil, to radiant energy utilises at least two juxtaposed, elongate radiant energy sources (32,34), such as ultraviolet germicidal radiation sources, providing a passage (26) between sources that is typically less than an inch (2.54cm) thick and that has walls (22,24) capable of transmitting the radiant energy. Fluid flow in a direction substantially parallel to the radiant energy sources, passes a fluid medium in a thin film through the passage, and the fluid medium is simultaneously exposed to the radiant energy by irradiating the fluid medium with the radiant energy sources. Preferably, the passage is in the configuration of an annulus surrounding one of the radiant energy sources (32), and a plurality of radiant energy sources (34) are arrayed around the passage. |
