[Also in Division F3] A cryogenic pump 8, Fig. 1, for evacuating an outer-space simulating chamber 2 comprises a plurality of metal baffle plates 28, Fig. 2, projecting from, and in thermal contact with, metal panels 25 cooled by liquid nitrogen in coils 26 and forming a part spherical vessel surrounding a test member 12 within the chamber 2, each baffle plate 28 having recesses 44 formed by walls 41 projecting from a backing plate 29. Condensing fins 31 cooled by liquid hydrogen or helium in coils 32 are carried by plates 25 so as to project between baffle plates 28. The chamber 2 is connected to external diffusion pumps 21 and mechanical pumps 23.
