A base member (1) has two pairs of legs (2, 3) mounted thereon on pivot bars (4, 5). The upper ends of the legs are pivotally connected by pivots (6 and 7) to a seat portion (8) and a backrest (9) is mounted by a further pivot (10) to the seat portion (8) through a linkage (11) which enables the backrest (9) to be lowered to the seat portion as required. A motor within a casing (12) drives the pivot bar (5) rotatably about its axis at a slow speed and is controlled from a hand-held unit (13) incorporating a toggle switch (14) which can be operated to drive the motor in one direction or the other or stop it at any intermediate position. When the motor is driven to rotate the pivot shaft (5) in an anti-clockwise direction the legs (2 and 3) of the seat portion (8) will move rearwardly, thus lowering the seat and moving the assembly of the seat portion and the backrest (9) into a more reclined position. In the fully collapsed position, the seat portion (8) will lie on the base and if the backrest (9) is then tilted forwardly the whole assembly is relatively compact. |
