A welding wire for use in flux-submerged or gas-shielded arc welding to deposit a high alloy steel consists of a mild steel or a low alloy steel tube and a filler of powdery material, the filler comprising at least 80% of a non-magnetic metal or alloy and a small percentage of a ferromagnetic material. Such wire may be made by rolling and/or drawing an ingot cored with the filler or by wrapping a strip around the filler and drawing to size. The composition of the filler enables a magnetic check to be performed on the wire during manufacture to test for the presence of the filler. A wire for depositing 20% Cr, 10% Ni steel consists of 45% mild steel tube, 5% iron powder and 50% of a powdered steel alloy containing 40% Cr, 20% Ni. Other wires may deposit Cr, Ni, Mo steel or 13% Mn steel. |
